Kangra is an important and religious town of Kangra District famous for Historical Brejeshwari Temple. Brejeshwari manifests herself recognized as one of the 51 seats of Sakti Peeth. Two important fairs are held during the nine days worship of the Devi in the month of April and in the mid October every Year. Thousands of people visit this Town to pay obeisance and to visit Historical Kangra fort every day. Kangra was known as a Trigarth State during the Mahabharata times after that it was known as Shusharm Nagar, Bhimkot and Nagarkot; The state remains under Muslims rulers after 1009 A.D. during the invasion by Mohammad Gajnavi up to 1846 A.D when Britishers took over the reins of State till independence.
Kangra is situated at the foot hill of Dhauladhar range of Himalayas 20 Kms. far from Dharamsala. Its altitude is around 720 mt. above mean sea level. Kangra is bounded on the north by a crest of Dhauladhar range. Kangra was existing committee area in the Year 1883 and this NAC promoted as small town committee in the year 1923 and the status of this committee was converted into Municipal Committee in the year 1955 and Municipal Committee D-designated into Municipal Council in the year 1994.
It is well connected to the important town/ cities like Jawalamukhi, Dharamsala, Palampur, Hamirpur, Pathankot, and Chandighar though National/ state highways. The town has one narrow gauge railhead situated on the branch line of Pathankot to Jogindernagar railway route. The town is well conceited with Shimla, Delhi and all over India by road.
Many ancient temples like the Jawalaji Temple, Vajreshwari Devi temple, Chamunda Devi temple, chintapurni temple Baba Baroh, Masroor Temple built by pandvaas and Baijnath temple are found here. One can also pay a visit to Gopalpur Nature Park in Gopalpur village and can also see tea gardens there.Kangra Fort is also a popular tourist attraction, so is Mcleodganj near Dharamsala,"Bhagsunag temple" is there, and Dharamshala is also headquarters of the district, and now home-in-exile to the Dalai Lama.[8]Cricket ground of dharamshala is also a major attraction because of its location and good quality pitch for players.
